The largest living creatures on earth and the playful imps of the seas – whales and dolphins are capturing the hearts of both enthusiasts and holiday makers from around the world, and Sri Lanka is becoming one of the most ideal locations to watch them in their natural habitat. Records of ancient seafarers indicate that the rich waters that surround our island have been home to whales and dolphins, and today with Sri Lanka being inside the International Whaling Commission’s protected zone their numbers are increasing and the sightings are becoming more frequent. The West coast towns of Alankuda and Kalpitiya are renowned for Dolphins with some whale sightings, but the North Eastern seas off Trincomalee and the Southern waters off Mirissa and Dondra Point are best for both whales and dolphins. The South coast of Sri Lanka is regarded as one of the best places in the world to observe Blue Whales and other cetaceans are frequent too, especially Sperm whales and many varieties of Dolphins – spinners being the most abundant. Being out at sea and encountering the mammoths of the oceans up close or being surrounded by a dancing pod of playful dolphins must be one of the most exhilarating experiences one can ever have.
