Rising high above the flat landscape, a giant rock surrounded by jungle on all sides dominates the vista, as it has done for time immemorial. Once the impenetrable citadel of King Kassapa, ‘Sihagiri’ or Lion’s Rock, is considered to be the 8th wonder of the world today; and a unique witness to the ingenuity of the ancient civilizations of Sri Lanka. From intricately landscaped gardens below the rock, the giant lion paws that mark the entrance to the fortress at its foot, the mirror wall where scribes of old have penned their verses, the amazing frescoes painted on to the sheer rock face, to the ruins of a once glorious city at the summit – 370m high; the matchless feats of artistry, architecture and engineering at Sigiriya continue to astound. It’s utter magnificence, even thousands of years on, giving a memorable glimpse of its past splendour.
