Journey Sri Lanka in search of evidence of the 443 years long colonial rule of the island by the Portuguese(1505 – 1660), Dutch (1660 – 1802) & British (1802 – 1948) . You would explore ten fortifications, Dutch reformed churches, garrison cemetaries, museums, etc. Visit the home towns of the local rebellion heros who stood up against colonization. Meet the Vedda people (ancient forest dwellers of the island) & discuss with their cheif about their experience during the colonial rule.

 

Day 01: Arrive in Negombo

Transfer to the fishing village of Negombo upon arrival & witness the first Dutch Fort which is now converted to a prison. Also visit the Dutch reformed church which is close by. In the evening take a boat ride in the Dutch canal which was used to transport goods. Today you will be able to witness a breathtaking eco system filled with many species of birds.

Day 02 & 03: Galle

Take the expressway to Galle & checkin to your Aman resort inside the Dutch built fort in Galle. In the evening explore the Dutch reformed Dutch church inside the fort while taking a walk inside the massive fort. On the next day journey to the Katuwana Fort to witness the Fort number 3. In the afternoon proceed back to Galle & en route witness the Matara Fort & the Dutch reforemed church.

Day 04 & 05: Nuwara Eliya

Proceed to the misty mountains & explore an entire city filled with Victorian age architectural buildings. You would be staying in one such property. On the next day enjoy Lunch at Hill Club, one of the oldest hotels in Nuwara Eliya.

Day 06 & 07: Kandy

Explore Fort number 5 in Balana & then proceed to witness evidance of the imprisonment of Robert Knox (an English sea captain who spent 19 years as a prisoner in Kandy). On the next day proceed to Uthuwankanda, where the local hero Saradiel waged civil war against the British. In the afternoon visit the Temple of the tooth & two garrison cemetaries of soldiers from the Coloniol era.

Day 08: Polonnaruwa

Proceed to Dambana to meet the forest dwellers / ancestors of Sri Lanka – The Veddas & engage in a discussion with their chief – “Vanniyaletto” about the Portugese, Dutch & British eras & their experiences during these times. In the evening if time permits visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Polonnaruwa.

Day 09 & 10: Passikudah

Visit fort number 6 – The Batticaloa Fort, during your two nights stay in one of the best beaches in the country. Relax the rest of the day in the resort or by the beach.

Day 11: Trincomalee

Proceed to Fort Fredrick in Trincomalee & also the Koneshwaram Kovil near by. In the evening visit the Garrison Cemetary.

Day 12 & 13: Anuradhapura & Mannar

Venture into the sacred city of Anuradhapura & relax the rest of the day or explore the ruin city. Early next day morning proceed to Mannar with packed breakfast & witness the Kunchikkulam Suspension Bridge built by the Dutch, Mannar Fort (Fort number 8), Arripu Fort & the Dorrick House Bungalow.

Day 14: Kalpitiya

Sleep in today & check out of the resort & drive to Kalpitiya where you would be able to witness your Fort number 10 – Kalpitiya Fort. Relax the rest of the day in the beach.

Day 15 & 16: Colombo

Take a boat ride into the Indian Ocean to witness Spinner Dolphins, Blue & Sperm Whales. Afterwards proceed to Colombo & visit the Dutch Hospital (now converted into a shopping complex) for a chilled beer & some relaxation. Next day journey to a Dutch reformed church, museum & the clock tower (Old Colombo Lighthouse) in Colombo fort which was designed by Sir Charles Barry (who also built the Big Ben in London). Finally proceed to the Dutch Burger Union where a lot of Dutch history can be found while you enjoy a chilled beer. Engage in some shopping in the evening.
